Working with the Alzheimer's Society to deliver an excellent Memory Clinic

Published on 10/07/2018

Bath’s dementia services were in the spotlight recently as RICE welcomed a group from the national Alzheimer’s Society for a tour of our Memory Clinic* and research facilities at the RUH.

We work in partnership with the Alzheimer's Society around the BaNES area - with RICE managing most local diagnosis of new people with memory-related problems such as Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

All people diagnosed with dementia and their carers coming through our clinic are offered ongoing advice from local partners like the Alzheimer's Society, to support their journey with dementia.

The RICE Memory Clinic saw more than 500 new patients last year, as well as over 1000 people attending follow-up visits.

Director of RICE, Professor Roy Jones, said: “We have benefited again this year from the presence of a number of support groups in our clinics including the Alzheimer’s Society Support Workers and staff from the Carers’ Centre and the Curo Independent Living Service who can assist and support people diagnosed with dementia in addition to our own expert team.

“We are extremely proud of the RICE Memory Clinic’s reputation. We look forward to continuing to work closely with our partners to share our expertise and to help shape the future of dementia services locally as we all try and help everyone affected by dementia to live as well as possible.

"Everyone attending the clinic can also potentially, if they wish, take part in our vital research programme to try and find better drug and non-drug treatments and other ways to help prevent and manage these difficult conditions.”

The Alzheimer’s Society is a key partner for this support and recent figures from the national charity show that the RICE model is providing among the highest rates of referrals in the UK.

Visiting the Institute, Marco van-Tintelen, the BaNES Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager, said: “We receive 70% of RICE patients as referrals to our services and our dementia support workers are at the RICE clinic three days a week to offer help and advice after a diagnosis has taken place.

“We also attend the RUH dementia strategy group with RICE and others to ensure that the RUH can offer the best possible care for people with dementia admitted to hospital.

“We have actively built a solid working relationship with RICE; this partnership helps us both to provide leading dementia support to people affected by dementia in the Bath and North East Somerset area.”
